In this video we recover platinum from platinum containing laboratory chemical waste. This is a bit different from recovering platinum in more common items like catalytic converters and jewellery because in laboratory waste the platinum is sometimes protected by extremely resilient ligands in organometallic complexes. Therefore we have to process the waste first and remove the organics before we can start on the platinum. To do that we first remove all the volatile compounds, mostly organics solvents, by a successive series of boiling and heating to higher temperatures. Finally we incinerate (or "ignite" as chemists say) the resulting dry waste to actually destroy the organic complexes. We use a torch to get it red hot and keep going until no more fumes or smoke appear. Then we wash the...

After the two additional AR digestions, 1.2 grams of black powder remained. I filtered the solution then denoxxed the resulting solution and filmed the video. Michael weighs and values some 14K gold hoop earrings, Lazooli's 18K rose gold earrings, and his old platinum wedding band. Value = weight of jewelry in grams X purity of gold in decimal form X gold price per gram. Purity = karat / 24 Price per gram = price per troy ounce / 31.1 You will need: 1) a gram scale, like this: http://amzn.to/119zlU6 2) the gold price (http://lazooli.com, http://goldprice.org) 3) a calculator 4) the purity (or karat) of your jewelry - look for the stamp (10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, etc) Shameless plug: note the melt value of those other 14K hoops ($99) compared to their price ($320, which was the best I could find as a retail customer). Only 30% of my money went towards gold - 15% would be typical. Compare that to our high-end 18K rose gold hoops: melt value of $278 vs retail price of $440. A full 62.5% of the price goes towards pure gold: http://lazooli.com/products/rose-gold-18k-hoops-2-by-3mm

Thanks. https://www.patreon.com/askJeffWilliams Want to Smelt your Gold from either Placer or Hard rock deposits but can't afford a furnace......Well now there is a mini furnace that runs off of standard Propane and is very affordable. New kit can Melt and Smelt 1 to 6 Oz in 10 minutes or less. We recommend using Hank Chapman Flux and a thinner to make every pour a success. We also recommend using a cone mold for any Smelting project you may be doing. Graphite molds work great and are very affordable.
