  • Platinum Recovery from Laboratory Chemical Waste (pt 1)

    In this video we recover platinum from platinum containing laboratory chemical waste. This is a bit different from recovering platinum in more common items like catalytic converters and jewellery because in laboratory waste the platinum is sometimes protected by extremely resilient ligands in organometallic complexes. Therefore we have to process the waste first and remove the organics before we can start on the platinum. To do that we first remove all the volatile compounds, mostly organics solvents, by a successive series of boiling and heating to higher temperatures. Finally we incinerate (or "ignite" as chemists say) the resulting dry waste to actually destroy the organic complexes.     This is a typical dental office scrap lot that has been mixed with flux, placed into a carbon/graphite crucible, and then placed in an induction furnace. An electro-magnetic field is created around the crucible and the metal molecules in the scrap and the crucible are excited and heated. After several minutes, depending on volume of scrap, the material is poured into a cone mold to separate the metal from non-metal.

    Precipitating Platinum ammonium chloride from Aqua Regia Solution. The source of the Platinum was 16.7 grams of 90/10 Pt/Ir thermocouples. The alloy took 7 hours to completely dissolve in hot diluted AR. I used zinc to precipitate the Pt and Ir together, then treated the resulting black powder with diluted AR again. After the two additional AR digestions, 1.2 grams of black powder remained. I filtered the solution then denoxxed the resulting solution and filmed the video. The Pt salt still has a scarlet tint indicating it still has some Ir in the salt. I'll have to calcine the salt and redissolve the resulting sponge in diluted AR, then precipitate again with ammonium chloride to get the nice canary yellow salt I'm looking for.

    http://www.goldnscrap.com ** Melting Silver, Here's a short demonstration of meltdown and casting of a 1 Kilogram (32.15 Troy Ounces) Silver Bullion Bar. Please note, the Silver was melted inside a graphite crucible (keeps Oxygen out) using an electric furnace. The actual pour of the metal is done all the while a propane flame is blazing into the mold cavity. Again, to prevent Oxygen absorption by the Silver (otherwise it will "spit" upon solidification). Also note, as this is a safety issue as well as a technical demand, that the mold was pre-heated prior to taking this video by placing the mold on top of the furnace lid. Molten metals being poured into a cold mold can literally "explode" out of the cavity all over you and the surrounding work place, posing a great fire and injury risk....

We are excited to post this video and show you all our progress on processing printed circuit boards (PCB's) for gold, copper and other metals with our hammer mill and shaker table. We have the ability to take whole boards, crush them, and run them on our shaker table. We are still in the experimental stage but we have high hopes to have a complete system ready to sell soon. I should clarify that we can't recover all the gold from the boards, but at the end of the video we do have free metallic gold in the gold pan. Our goal is to take whole boards and concentrate out the valuables (metals) from the non-values (fiberglass, plastic, etc). The free gold can easily be removed, melted, and sold directly to a gold buyer, leaving the concentrates, which are much more valuable that the boards themselves. The remaining gold is plated onto other metals. This cannot be mechanically separated, but using the hammer mill and shaker table it can be concentrated into a salable product. The #2 and #3 hole outputs can be sold to a refiner and let them deal with all the chemicals and refining process. For most people its too complicated, dangerous, expensive, etc. to separate out the different metals in the concentrates. As a side note the free gold per pound recovered from the ~20 pounds of boards equates to 1 troy ounce per ton of boards. This would be considered very high grade gold ore for any miner. The PCB's also have loads of copper, tin, lead, plated gold, etc that is added value on top of that 1 oz/ton free gold recovered. This is a typical dental office scrap lot that has been mixed with flux, placed into a carbon/graphite crucible, and then placed in an induction furnace. An electro-magnetic field is created around the crucible and the metal molecules in the scrap and the crucible are excited and heated. After several minutes, depending on volume of scrap, the material is poured into a cone mold to separate the metal from non-metal.

This is a simple, DIY propane furnace you can easily build at home using a peach can, or whatever. Simply line the inside using Kaowool. Knock a hole in the side for your Torch. And you're good. Its extremely easy. And it gets very hot. I use this set up to take with me mining and melt my small fines into ingots. For scrap silver. And to make different things for jewelry making. The Graphite Molds are made by my friend and Neighbor Paul, aka Canvasman34. You can buy his graphite molds dirt cheap on Ebay. Just look up Canvasman34 as the user name. You can link to his youtube videos in the upper left hand corner of this video. The pickle solution I use, is Sparex brand. This is what gets rid of the discoloration on your silver after its been melted. Quench your piece in your pickle and let sit for a few. Then wipe it clean. Sometimes, a little steel wool helps bring out the shine. Sparex works best warm. So I use a crock pot. A pickle solution can eat away at your clothes. So try not to get it on you. And use only in a ceramic bowl. Not Metal. As mentioned before, crock pot is what I use, and it works the best. Have fun. Be careful. Once your done with your Graphite Mold, put it some place out of reach and avoid getting burnt. The burns hurt. Believe me.

Precipitating Platinum ammonium chloride from Aqua Regia Solution. The source of the Platinum was 16.7 grams of 90/10 Pt/Ir thermocouples. The alloy took 7 hours to completely dissolve in hot diluted AR. I used zinc to precipitate the Pt and Ir together, then treated the resulting black powder with diluted AR again. After the two additional AR digestions, 1.2 grams of black powder remained. I filtered the solution then denoxxed the resulting solution and filmed the video. The Pt salt still has a scarlet tint indicating it still has some Ir in the salt. I'll have to calcine the salt and redissolve the resulting sponge in diluted AR, then precipitate again with ammonium chloride to get the nice canary yellow salt I'm looking for.

http://www.goldnscrap.com ** Melting Silver, Here's a short demonstration of meltdown and casting of a 1 Kilogram (32.15 Troy Ounces) Silver Bullion Bar. Please note, the Silver was melted inside a graphite crucible (keeps Oxygen out) using an electric furnace. The actual pour of the metal is done all the while a propane flame is blazing into the mold cavity. Again, to prevent Oxygen absorption by the Silver (otherwise it will "spit" upon solidification). Also note, as this is a safety issue as well as a technical demand, that the mold was pre-heated prior to taking this video by placing the mold on top of the furnace lid. Molten metals being poured into a cold mold can literally "explode" out of the cavity all over you and the surrounding work place, posing a great fire and injury risk. The mold was also seasoned prior to taking this video by coating it with a layer of soot from the propane flame. This particular mold was made by me, unfortunately, it seems that i chose the wrong kind of graphite to work with (too porous), hence, the not so perfect surface finish (as you can see, the surface is slightly dimpled).
